Principal Analytics Engineer (Amazon Marketplace)
Help Brands Win on Amazon - and Love Where You Work
Role: Principal Data Analytics Engineer
Location: San Diego, CA 92101 (Onsite at Symphony Towers)
Compensation Range: $150,000-$180,000 DOE
At Luminize, we help brands win, and as one of the top Amazon sellers in the US, we are looking for an exceptional builder to bring clarity and scalability to our data ecosystem.
This is a true principal-level role for a transformation expert who thrives on solving ambiguity. You will be our primary technical authority for data logic, responsible for modernizing legacy workflows and architecting high-performance analytics foundations. You won't be managing ingestion pipelines; instead, you will focus on untangling complex data stories and ensuring our BigQuery and dbt environments are world-class.
What You'll Be Doing
- Architect Scalable Logic – Lead the architecture, refactoring, and optimization of our transformation layer. You will untangle legacy workflows, undocumented lineage, and circular data flows to build a future-ready "Source of Truth."
- Establish Engineering Standards – Set and enforce the gold standard for dbt structure, advanced macro usage, testing frameworks, and documentation across the organization.
- Optimize Performance – Own BigQuery performance optimization from the transformation side, using smart partitioning, clustering, and incremental modeling strategies to ensure cost-efficiency and speed.
- Lead Technical Strategy – Serve as the principal authority on SQL and data modeling. You will balance hands-on engineering with high-level strategy to shape Luminize’s modern data roadmap.
- Solve Ambiguity – Partner with executive leadership to translate vague, complex business questions into scalable data solutions and actionable insights.
- Mentor & Level-Up – Provide deep technical mentorship and code reviews to senior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
What We're Looking For
- Experience – 8+ years in analytics engineering or data modeling, with at least 3+ years in a senior or principal capacity.
- Technical Mastery – Expert-level SQL and dbt (Core + Cloud). You should have a track record of diagnosing and fixing poorly performing models and designing advanced dbt architectures.
- Data Architecture Expertise – Deep understanding of dimensional modeling and how to structure data in a modern warehouse (BigQuery preferred) for maximum usability and performance.
- Problem-Solving Prowess – Proven experience working in ambiguous environments where systems must be restructured and modernized without disrupting business operations.
- Leadership & Influence – Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex logic into clear concepts for C-level executives and brand managers.
Preferred Qualifications (The "Pluses")
- eCommerce Data Expertise: Experience with marketplace KPIs, advertising efficiency (ACOS/TACOS), and SKU-level metrics.
- Financial Analytics Background: Strong understanding of COGS, margin optimization, and financial reconciliation.
Inventory Management Systems: Experience modeling demand forecasting, reorder points, or supply chain data.
